Hamlet â⬠Comment On Humanity Essay Example For Students
Hamlet â⬠Comment On Humanity Essay The Elizabethan play The Tragedy of Hamlet Prince of Denmark is one of William Shakespeares most well known works. One of the potential explanations behind this plays prominence is the manner in which Shakespeare utilizes the character Hamlet to represent the intricate activities of the human brain. The methodology taken by Shakespeare in Hamlet has produced endless various understandings of importance, however it is through Hamlets battle to stand up to his inward difficulty, choosing when to vindicate his dads passing, that the peruser gets mindful of one of the more typical translations in Hamlet; the possibility that Shakespeare is endeavoring to remark on the impact that ones perspective can have on the choices they make throughout everyday life. As the play unfurls, Shakespeare utilizes the experiences that Hamlet must face to show the impact that ones point of view can have in transit the psyche works. In his book Some Shakespeare Themes ; An Approach to Hamlet, L.C. Knight pa ys heed to Shakespeares utilization of these experiences to travel into the activities of the human psyche when he writes:What we have in Hamlet.is the investigation and understood analysis of a specific perspective or consciousness. In Hamlet, Shakespeare utilizes a progression of experiences to uncover the perplexing condition of the human brain, made up of reason, feeling, and demeanor towards oneself, to permit the peruser to make a judgment or structure a conclusion about essential parts of human life. (192) Shakespeare makes way for Hamlets inside difficulty in Act 1, Scene 5 of Hamlet when the phantom of Hamlets father shows up and calls upon Hamlet to vindicate his foul and most unnatural homicide (1.5.24). It is starting now and into the foreseeable future that Hamlet must battle with the problem of whether to execute Claudius, his uncle, and if so when to really do it. As the play advances, Hamlet doesn't look for his vengeance whenever the open door introduces itself, and the thinking Hamlet uses to legitimize his postpone that gets principal to the perusers underezding of the impact that Hamlets mental point of view has on his circumstance. So as to completely underezd how Hamlets point of view assumes a significant job in this play, the peruser must endeavor to respond to the key inquiry: Why does Hamlet linger in rendering retribution on Claudius? In spite of the fact that the response to this inquiry is, best case scenario to some degree entangled, Mark W. Scott endeavors to offer some potential clarifications for Hamlets delay in his book, Shakespeare for Students: Critics who discover the reason for Hamlets delay in his inner reflections normally see the ruler as a man of extraordinary good honesty who is compelled to submit a demonstration which conflicts with his most profound standards. On various events, the ruler attempts to understand his ethical issue through close to home contemplations, which Shakespeare presents as talks. Another point of view of Hamlets inward battle recommends that the ruler has gotten so embittered with life since his dads passing that he has neither the craving nor the will to get ret ribution. (74)Mr. Scott brings up ethical quality and disappointment, the two of which have a place exclusively with a people own cognizant, as two potential reasons for Hamlets hesitation, andtherefore he offers backing to the possibility that Shakespeare is setting significant accentuation on the job of individual point of view in this play. The significance that Mr. Scotts remark puts on Hamlets utilization of individual reflections to understand his ethical difficulty (74), likewise assists with supporting L.C. Knights conflict that Shakespeare is endeavoring to utilize these predicaments to show the inward activities of the human mind.In Hamlet, Shakespeare offers the peruser a chance to assess the manner in which the title character handles an exceptionally muddled issue and the issues that are produced as a result of it. These issues that face Hamlet are maybe best seen as exaggerations of the very sorts of issues that all individuals must face as they live their lives every day. The size of these ordinary issues are quite often a matter of individual point of view. Every individual will see a given circumstance dependent on his own perspective. The one, maybe widespread, predicament that faces all of humankind is theproblem of character. As Victor L. Cahn composes, Hamlets essential predicament is that of each individual: given this time and place and these circumezces, How is he to react? What is his duty? (69). This quandary characterized by Mr. Cahn fits in well with the remarks of both L.C. Knight and Mark Scott, since it also requires some genuine reflection with respect to Hamlet to determine, and furthermore underpins the possibility that Shakespeare is utilizing Hamlets problem to outline the impact that point of view, or perspective, can have on a given circumstance. .u234f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71 , .u234f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71 .postImageUrl , .u234f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71 .focused content territory { min-stature: 80px; position: relative; } .u234f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71 , .u234f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71:hover , .u234f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71:visited , .u234f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71:active { border:0!important; } .u234f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71 .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .u234f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71 { show: square; progress: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-change: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; darkness: 1; change: mistiness 250ms; webkit-progress: obscurity 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .u234f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71:active , .u234f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71:hover { murkiness: 1; progress: haziness 250ms; webkit-progress: obscurity 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .u234f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71 .focused content zone { width: 100%; position: rela tive; } .u234f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71 .ctaText { fringe base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: striking; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; content enhancement: underline; } .u234f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71 .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; text style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .u234f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71 .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; outskirt: none; outskirt sweep: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; textual style weight: intense; line-tallness: 26px; moz-fringe range: 3px; content adjust: focus; content design: none; content shadow: none; width: 80px; min-stature: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/straightforward arrow.png)no-rehash; position: outright; right: 0; top: 0; } .u234f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .u234 f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71 .focused content { show: table; tallness: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .u234f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .u234f16af06ecfdda14ec11513f480c71:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: Total Physical Response Essay Hamlets delay in looking for retribution for his dads passing assumes a significant job in permitting Shakespeares investigate the human brain to show itself. My Papas Waltz- Roethkes Mixed Feelings - Literature Essay Samples
The poem My Papaââ¬â¢s Waltz by Theodore Roethke is a work rich in ambiguities, which are shown through the language used in the work as well as in the relationship between the speaker and his father. Readers can detect two sides to this poem. One side being a loving memory of the speakerââ¬â¢s father, and the other being a memory of a fearful encounter with the speakerââ¬â¢s father. Roethke takes the role of the speaker, looking back at a memory of his own childhood with his father. The poem, however, shows that it is neither one-sidedly loving or fearful, but a mixture of both, showing ââ¬Å"Roethkeââ¬â¢s ambivalent feelings toward his father, Otto Roethke, whose ââ¬Ëstrength wasâ⬠¦a source of both admiration and fear, of comfort and restrictionââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (McKenna) At first glance, the reader gets the impression that the poem will likely be a cheerful poem about a loving relationship between a father and son. However, once one reads through the poem, the reader may question the title, seeing some violent language throughout the piece and some confusing emotions. The use of the word ââ¬Å"Papaâ⬠in the title suggests a loving tone of a son that holds his father very dear, and readers agree that there is a loving tone portrayed in the poem, with a few mixed in emotions. One critic writes that ââ¬Å"Roethkes poetic genius lay in his ability to make his words become an event, to arrange them in such a way as to create in their reading the sweep and energy of dynamic life. This quality shows up most clearly when the energy finds its way blocked by obstacles or when its motion and sweet are set off against the perfect stillness of deathâ⬠(Blessing). Roethke wrote this poem as an elegy for his father, who died when Roethke was 14 years ol d (McRoberts), and the seemingly mixed emotions of the poem are shown here with Roethke trying to make a happy memory come to life, but it is being offset by death. One critic comments that ââ¬Å"surely this was a moment characterized by conflicting emotions for the speaker: love and fright; excitement and concern; a rough tendernessâ⬠(McKenna). If the reader chooses to look at the work as a loving poem to his father about an encounter that he had, the poem is full of love and happy memories. The poem is written in a lighter, loving way the sing-song rhyme scheme seems to fit perfectly. The way the poem is written is in a sort of waltzy rhythm that matches the waltz that the father and son are performing. The ââ¬Å"rollicking rhythms of the poem; the playfulness of a rime like dizzy and easyâ⬠(Fong) give it a light, playful feeling. Even the way the poem rhymes in an A-B-A-B rhyme scheme suggests a sort of orderliness that could be portrayed in a happy orderly family. Many readers interpret the first line of the poem as negative in stating that ââ¬Å"The whiskey on [the fatherââ¬â¢s] breath / could make a small boy dizzyâ⬠(Roethke 1-2). Whiskey on oneââ¬â¢s breath is not usually spoken about in a manner that would suggest happiness, but instead of drunkenness and possibly violence. However, a father stopping by the bar after work before coming home was, and still is very prominent and whiskey a popular drink of choice, making the father giddy and able to show his love for his son more freely, being ââ¬Å"tipsy enough so that exuberance and love could slip throughâ⬠(Fong). A drunken father can also confuse small children, leading to the notes of fear and confusion in the lines of the poem. The next two lines of the poem hold a touch of ambiguity in that while the boy ââ¬Å"hung on like deathâ⬠(Roethke 3) to his father, which suggests that he needs his fatherââ¬â¢s love and support, the next line states that ââ¬Å"Such waltzing was not easyâ⬠(Roethke 4). This makes the reader question whether the boy was holding on to his father out of love for his father, or of fear and that the boyââ¬â¢s father coming home in this drunken state was not an easy thing for the boy to handle or process. However, Roethke seemed to be relatively close to his father when he was young and ââ¬Å"spent many hours in the greenhouses, following and helping his father in his workâ⬠(McRoberts), making it hard to assume that the lines only hold fear, but that they hold a great amount of love for his father. In the second stanza of the poem, Roethke writes that ââ¬Å"We romped until the pans / Slid from the kitchen shelfâ⬠(Roethke 5-6). There is much ambiguity in the se two lines and they have been interpreted in a violent way many times. However, this being an elegy to Roethkeââ¬â¢s father, the lines do not make sense for them to hold violent tones. This could be seen as the father and son doing a literal waltz around the kitchen, the father having been drinking, making it a very clumsy dance and in turn accidentally knocking the pans from their shelves. Roethke chooses to use ââ¬Å"the joyful suggestions of the words waltz, waltzing, and rompedâ⬠(Fong) in the piece, the word ââ¬Å"rompedâ⬠in line five, which usually holds a playful connotation suggesting a playful wrestle, not something that is truly violent. Roethke writes ââ¬Å"My motherââ¬â¢s countenance / Could not unfrown itselfâ⬠(Roethke 7-8) in the next two lines suggesting that Roethkeââ¬â¢s mother is not happy with the events unfolding in front of her. The mother in the poem could be seeing her husband coming home in a drunken stupor, messing up her kitch en and interrupting her sonââ¬â¢s bedtime which would make any mother upset. In the next stanza, the speaker states that ââ¬Å"The hand on my wrist / was battered on one knuckleâ⬠(Roethke 9-10), a surprising thing for a small boy to notice, unless the boy was already confused about the interaction he was having with his father, in which case Roethke as a young child would notice that and feel that it was worth mentioning as it added to the confusion. The second half of the third stanza shows just how small the boy, or the speaker, is at the time of the events that are transpiring in the poem. With Otto Roethke dying when Theodore Roethke was only a young 14 years old, the poem is a look back before his father became sick with cancer (McRoberts), when he was still healthy enough to drink and ââ¬Å"rompâ⬠around with his son. These lines could suggest that it is hard for the boy to keep up with the waltz as the pair dance around the house in that it states that ââ¬Å"At every step [the boy] missed / [His] right ear scraped a buckleâ⬠(Roethke 11-12). It would be difficult for a child who is only as high as a grown manââ¬â¢s belt buckle to keep up with his strides, and because of this, the boyââ¬â¢s ear could be scraping his fatherââ¬â¢s belt buckle as they waltz. These lines also indicate that while the frolicking was fun, it was also painful for the boy, having his ear scraped, making the act a bit more frightening. In the first line of the final stanza, it states ââ¬Å"You beat time on my headâ⬠(Roethke 13). This line tends to make the reader question the innocence of the poem because of Roethkeââ¬â¢s choice of the word ââ¬Å"beatâ⬠. Typically, one would describe this action as tapping or stomping out time, and in Roethkeââ¬â¢s first version of the poem he used the line ââ¬Å"You kept time on my headâ⬠, later revising it to the word ââ¬Å"beatâ⬠giving a more ominous, negative, more violent, tone to the line (McKenna). However, this could also just be Roethkeââ¬â¢s way of describing how the speakerââ¬â¢s father kept the boy in time while in a waltz. With the father being drunk, it is possible that he could be ââ¬Å"happily using his sons head for a drumâ⬠(Fong), but tapping it a bit too hard unnoticing the pain that it is causing the boy, leading the word to become ââ¬Å"beatâ⬠instead of something more innocent like ââ¬Å"keptâ⬠. The next line describes the fatherââ¬â¢s hand as having ââ¬Å"a palm caked hard by dirtâ⬠. A hand that is caked with dirt in relation to a father usually has the connotation that he is hard working which causes more ambiguity in the stanza. A hard working father usually means a father that has a lot of love for his family, and if one interprets the poem as having violent undertones, this line would not fit as well. Roethkeââ¬â¢s father also spent a lot of time in his greenhouses, that were later sold after an argument with Roethkeââ¬â¢s uncle (McRoberts). Roethke, having spent a lot of time in the greenhouses with his father as a child, would have wanted to incorporate the dirt that was left on the hands of his father, reminding him of the happy times that they spent together there. The last two lines seem to hold the most love and affection for Roethkeââ¬â¢s father. Instead of having a confusing, possibly frightened tone, these lines suggest purely love. The last two lines state that ââ¬Å"[Roethkeââ¬â¢s Father] then waltzed me off to bed / Still clinging to your shirtâ⬠(Roethke 15-16). Even if this poem does suggest notes of fear in the boy, in these lines the boy seems to love his father even with the confusing emotions that he experiences when the father comes home in his drunken stupor, as any young child would love a parent unconditionally. The last two lines of the poem are simply just the picture of a loving father waltzing his son off to bed with his son holding on, not wanting his father to leave him and the fun to end. While some readers may choose to pick just one side of the ambiguous poem, innocent waltzing or complete fearful violence, Roethke picked and chose specific words for the poem that do not coincide with just one side, but with elements of both sides of the interpretation. However, Roethke leaves the interpretation of the poem up to the reader letting each individual make their own judgement ââ¬Å"depending on what personal experience they filter it throughâ⬠(McKenna). In 1976, Apple was founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak after Jobs dropped out of college. Jobs was responsible for innovation and business while Wozniak was responsible for the engineering portion, and both had no experience in running a company. Apple needed an experienced CEO, so they brought in Michael Scott to run the company. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Apple was Founded by Steve Jobs" essay for you Create order He left in 1981, so Jobs brought in CEO of PepsiCo John Sculley in 1983. Issues began to arise because Jobs himself wanted to be CEO, but Apple did not believe he was the proper fit for the position. At this time, Jobs had created a poor reputation for being difficult to work with because he was too focused on details and at times, this affected his teams feelings and deadlines. (Weinberger) In 1985, Jobs and his team released the Lisa, the first computer with a graphical user interface. Although, it was a great product, it did not sell well in the market. He later created the Macintosh, which resulted in better sales, but was not enough to compete with IBMs PC market. Sculley believed that Jobs needed to be watched over considering he was difficult to work with, so Jobs was reassigned away from the Macintosh project and put in charge of New Product Development. Jobs being upset with this reassignment, went to Apples board of directors, who sided with Sculley. Jobs feeling powerless in a company he created, decided to resign on September 17, 1985 and moved on to create NeXT. Over the next couple of years, NeXT created good PCs but still had low sales. With Jobs gone and Scully in charge, Apple began to lose focus. Apple fired Sculley and eventually brought in Gil Amelio as CEO in 1996. In 1997, Amelio acquired NeXT, bringing back Jobs. By August, Jobs had taken over as CEO and brought in a new board, and made peace with Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft. Finally, in 1998, Apple introduced their iMac, bring the company back to its glory. I believe it was important for Apple to release Steve Jobs. After Jobs left, he started a new company and learned to manage his emotions that were affecting his team and learned to balance the desire and ability to create products on time and in budget. (Blodget). In our weekly assignments, we discussed the great comebacks of companies such as Harley Davidson and IBM. In the chapter discussing Harley Davidson, I learned about the importance of visionary leadership. Having a vision is someone who has a clear sense of the companys future environment and the actions need to thrive in it. (Hartley) A leader with vision will help their company take opportunities before competitors and raise itself up from any difficulties they are facing. Hartley states five ingredients of visionary leadership. The first is to challenge the process. A leader should encourage innovation and anyone with new ideas. The second is to be enthusiastic. A great visionary leader will inspire their team to share their vision. When sharing the same vision, employees will be on the same page and have the same enthusiasm to reach their companys future goals. Another ingredient is to help other to act; to be supportive of their teams efforts and skills. A visionary leader should set the example of how others should act in the workplace. The final ingredient is to celebrate achievements. Employees should bring their hearts and their minds to the workplace. In celebrating their achievements, they will be happier to work every day and more loyal to the companys vison. Before Steve Jobs was let go from Apple, he had a vision for his company, but he did not use all these ingredients to achieve leadership. Jobs worked with a team, but he allowed his emotions to interfere with his visions. The one ingredient he followed was to challenge the process. Jobs always had new ideas and was never afraid to share them. His issue was his immaturity stopped him from sharing his visions to the company in a way they can also envision it because he did not display model behavior, and he also did not encourage his team to share his vision. During this time, Jobs lost support from his teams along with the board of Apple. After Jobs left, he learned how to use these skills at his company NeXT. With Scully in charge and Jobs gone, Apple lost all their future vision, and struggled to innovate new products. Because of this, Scully was fired, and Apple searched for a new leader with great plans for their future. When Jobs returned to Apple, he displayed true visionary leadership. He had developed the skills to be leader and used these skills to bring Apple back from near bankruptcy. Throughout this class, I have also learned the importance of leadership style. Since the beginning of Apple, Jobs had always wanted to be CEO of the company. When the company was created Jobs could not take up that role because he had no experience in running a company. Although, at the time he was not labeled CEO, he attempted to act the role and failed miserably due to his leadership style. In Management Mistakes Successes by Robert F. Hartley, a chapter focused on the management mistakes made at Continental Airlines. Frank Lorenzo was CEO during Continental Airlines downfall. Lorenzo was failing the company by displaying poor corporate culture and had a poor management style. He was described as a Theory X manager, who has low opinions of subordinates. According to Hartley, a Theory X manager views their subordinates as, disliking work, lacking in ambition, irresponsible, resistant to change, preferring to be led rather than to lead. This management style brought fear into his employees. They were not willing to work hard, they feared to discuss new ideas, and failed to communicate any issues. To the save company, Continental Airlines brought in CEO, Gordon Bethune, described as a Theory Y manager. Harley describes a Theory Y manager to see their subordinates as, willing to work, willing to accept responsibility, capable of self-direction, capable of self-control, and capable of imagination, ingenuity, and creativity. With this style, Bethune won back the hearts of his employees and shared his vision of the company. By displaying the management style, he gained the trust of his team, and salvaged the airline. Before Jobs came back to save Apple, he could have been described as a Theory X manager. During the Macintosh project, jobs fired anyone who disagreed with the project and hired employees of his skill level. He was immature, stubborn and had no control over his emotions. He refused to listen to ideas other than his own and was described as mercurial and demanding. After returning to Apple, jobs could be better described as a Theory Y manager. He learned to encourage his employees ideas and had faith that his subordinates can manage themselves. Using this management style, Jobs gained the trust of his employees and board, along with his employees and board gaining their trust in him and was able to resurrect Apple from the edge of bankruptcy. Overall, I learned that Apple had to bring Steve Jobs back to regain the future vision of Apple. Although most say that Apples biggest mistake was allowing Jobs to leave, I believe it was a necessary action. His behavior was unacceptable in a professional environment, and he was not acting as a team player. If Jobs had never left Apple, then he may have never developed the skills he needed to become the inspiration leader he is today. In my opinion, if he did not leave, he would have never realized the mistakes he had made. By leaving, he evaluated his faults and learned to become an inspirational leader. With his new developed skills, he gave his company a vision. Jobs focused on attracting skilled and creative people who wanted to change the world by making better tools. Throughout this process, Jobs managed to make a lot of money, but that was never his goal. His high profits were a result of his clear vision, his executions, and his willingness to lead, fail, and to try again. (H usick) References Hartley, R. F. (2011). Management mistakes and successes.
